Our languages' curriculum is designed to develop confident, curious and respectful global citizens who enjoy learning about other cultures and communicating in a different language.
Pupils gradually build their knowledge and skills from Year 3 to Year 6, beginning with simple words and phrases and developing into being able to hold conversations, express opinions and present ideas with increasing accuracy and confidence. We place a strong emphasis on communication, ensuring pupils learn to listen, speak, read and write in another language while developing an understanding of grammar, sentence structure and pronunciation.
Through carefully sequenced topics such as personal information, home, food, holidays and school, children expand their vocabulary and learn how to apply it meaningfully in real-life contexts. Alongside this, pupils explore cultural diversity by learning about traditions, lifestyles and beliefs from around the world, helping them to respect differences and understand their place within a global community.
By the time they leave us, pupils are confident beginner linguists who have the knowledge, skills and enthusiasm to continue their language learning and engage with the wider world.
