Schools across The Rivers C of E Academy Trust are celebrating the impact of the Sing, Speak and Shine project after two years of participation, helping pupils develop confidence, communication skills and creativity through music, performance and spoken language activities.

Supported by Severn Arts professional artists and creative practitioners, the project has provided pupils and staff with opportunities to explore new ways of learning through singing, rhythm, poetry, rap, storytelling and body percussion. The initiative is designed to strengthen young people's oracy skills while encouraging self-expression and engagement in learning. 

Over the past two years, children across our trust have embraced the programme with enthusiasm, developing their confidence to speak, perform and share ideas in front of others. Teachers have also benefited from working alongside experienced artists, gaining new skills and strategies that can be applied across the curriculum. The project's focus on creativity has supported learning in subjects such as English and Mathematics, while helping pupils improve communication, participation and collaboration. 

Staff involved in the project have reported increased engagement from pupils, particularly those who may previously have lacked confidence in the classroom. Through activities such as rhythm work, creative writing, performance and collaborative speaking tasks, children have been encouraged to contribute ideas, take risks and celebrate their own unique talents. 

One of the most significant outcomes has been the positive impact on pupil voice. Teachers observed children becoming more willing to participate in lessons, articulate their thoughts and share their opinions. The project's inclusive approach created an environment where every contribution was valued, helping pupils build confidence and resilience. 

Reflecting on the impact of the programme, one teacher said:

"I really do think that this project will impact my career forever. To see how much being a creative teacher impacts the children and their attainment and their engagement and their participation has been so beneficial for me."

The programme has also left a lasting legacy for schools within our trust. By embedding creative teaching approaches into everyday classroom practice, staff have developed new ways to inspire learning and ensure that engagement remains high. Resources and professional development materials created through the project will continue to support teaching and learning across the trust in the years ahead.
