Wilder School Outdoor Learning

Helping children learn through nature

Spending time in nature can help children build confidence, curiosity and a better understanding of the world around them.

This short video from the Worcestershire Wildlife Trust shows how outdoor learning has been woven into everyday school life through the Wilder Schools programme.

Five primary schools within our trust just joined the project in January 2025, as part of the Wildlife Trust’s wider ambition to connect people across Worcestershire to nature and empower one in four to take meaningful action for wildlife by 2030.

Each school has formed a dedicated team of staff who have received practical training in outdoor education techniques such as risk assessment, pond dipping, and fire lighting. These educators are now sharing their knowledge with colleagues and embedding outdoor learning into their curriculum planning.

Children have embraced the opportunity to learn outside the classroom and have taken part in activities such as

  • Surveying school grounds to identify local wildlife
  • Flower bunting crafts
  • Den building to understand animal habitats
