Supporting a smooth move to Year 1

Staff collaboration to support a smooth, confident transition that builds on what children already know.

This week, our Reception and Year 1 teachers spent time together focused on making the transition from Early Years to Key Stage 1 as smooth and positive as possible for children.

The day allowed staff to deepen their understanding of how children develop and to think carefully about how learning in Year 1 builds on what children already know from EYFS. A big focus was planning the transition so that it feels gentle, familiar and supportive, rather than a sudden change.

When children feel emotionally secure and confident, they settle more quickly, enjoy their learning and are ready to thrive in Year 1.

" Effective transition ensures children experience familiar routines and learning that builds on what they already know. By making small, gradual changes rather than changing everything at once, children are supported to adjust with confidence," explains Ella Atkinson, Teaching and Learning Strategic Lead.

It was a really positive day, with lots of great discussion and ideas shared. Staff left feeling motivated and confident about how we support children as they take this important next step.
